From the global money lender (World Bank)’s analysis, the Nigerian economy should brace itself for harder times in 2023 as oil prices are set to get weaker in the number.
The World Bank has alerted Nigerians on how the Nigerian economy will slow down to 2.9% in 2023 due to resulting weakness from the oil sector following the global chaos that has been the Russian-Ukraine crisis.
This information was provided by the multilateral lender in its report on 2023 Global Economic Prospects, which was made available to IsaacAfrica on Tuesday, January 10.
The analysis predicts that Nigeria’s economy would grow at a rate of 2.9% in 2023 and 2.9% in 2024, which is just above population growth.
The World Bank predicts that continuing deterioration in the oil industry will impede economic momentum in the non-oil economy. From the report:
“Existing production, security challenges, and moderation in oil prices are expected to hinder a recovery in oil output. Policy uncertainty sustained high inflation, and rising incidence of violence is anticipated to temper growth.
“The fiscal position is expected to remain weak because of high borrowing costs, lower energy prices, sluggish growth of oil production, and subdued activity in the non-oil sectors.”
The World Bank also mentioned in the research that in 2022, the Nigerian economy/GDP was contracted to 3.1%. And a lot of things contributed to this, including decreasing crude oil prices, growing production costs, theft of crude oil, lax payment policies in joint ventures, and ongoing underinvestment.
The World Bank attributes part of these problems to the diversion of oil money to fuel subsidies, which is projected to account for more than 2% of GDP in 2022.
The world economy will only increase by 1.7% in 2023, according to the World Bank research, down significantly from the anticipated 2.9% growth in 2022. In an interview with AFP on January 10, economist Ayhan Kose of the World Bank stated:
“The world’s economy is on a razor’s edge and could easily fall into recession if financial conditions tighten.”
According to the World Bank, growth in per capita income in the sub-Saharan African area, which is home to approximately 60% of the world’s severely poor, is predicted to average just 1.2% from 2023 to 2024. At this rate, poverty rates may increase rather than decrease.
The expected global economic downturn is attributed by the World Bank to rising inflation, high interest rates, decreased investment, and interruptions brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The legal team for the racing star stated they are prepared to launch a lawsuit if doing so would allow them to recoup the $12 million that inexplicably vanished from Bolt’s account.
According to a statement made by Bolt’s attorneys, there is reportedly just $12,000 still in Usain Bolt’s account.
“The account was part of Bolt’s retirement and lifetime savings,” his lawyer, Linton P. Gordon, told Fortune magazine over the phone. It’s distressing news for anyone, and certainly in the case of Mr Bolt, who established this account as part of his private pension,” Gordon said on Wednesday.
“We will be going to court with the matter” if the company does not return the funds, Gordon said. It is a grave disappointment, and we are hoping that the matter will be resolved in a way that Mr Bolt will recover his money and be able to live in peace.”
The business’ response was: Stocks & Securities Ltd. stated in a statement on January 12 that it had informed law authorities of the fraudulent activities by a former employee.
It said that it has tightened standards and taken steps to safeguard consumers’ assets.
The “alleged fraudulent operations at SSL that are reported to have affected the accounts of Mr. Usain Bolt and other persons” are being investigated, according to a second statement made on Monday by the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
The Jamaican government participates: Nigel Clarke, the finance minister for Jamaica, asserted SSL had perpetrated “alarming and vile fraud” on Tuesday night and vowed to “bring all perpetrators to account.”
According to the Associated Press, Mr. Bolt’s account with the business was established as a pension for both of his parents as well as the eight-time Olympic gold medalist sprinter.
After dominating the sprinting world for a decade, reviving a sport ravaged by drug scandals, and becoming as well-known as Muhammad Ali, Bolt announced his retirement in 2017.
