As the customer interaction platform strives to control expenses during the general economic slump, Twilio today revealed that it will lay off between 800 and 900 employees, or 11% of its workforce. CEO Jeff Lawson described the layoffs as “smart and essential” in a statement to the workforce, attributing in part to them Twilio’s explosive expansion over the past several years and “[lack of focus]” on crucial tasks.
In a message that was issued internally and made public on Twilio’s blog, Lawson stated, “I take responsibility for those actions, as well as the tough decision to do this layoff. Twilio has consistently been a growing business. And as you are aware, we are dedicated to building a successful business. Being profitable at our scale will make us stronger… In the end, we discovered that some investments were no longer necessary and we also discovered some areas where we might be more productive.
According to Lawson, the cuts will mostly impact “areas of go-to-market,” R&D, and Twilio’s general and administrative departments. Employees affected — who were notified this morning — will receive at least 12 weeks of pay, as well as one week for every year of service at Twilio, in addition to the value of Twilio’s next stock vest.
Lawson says Twilio’s talent acquisition team will create a list that laid-off employees can opt into, to be shared with other companies that may be hiring and “investors who know many such companies.”

Twilio’s Q2 2022 sales growth was 41%, the lowest since the December quarter in 2017, as the company faced a cyberattack that compromised the data of more than 100 customers. In its most recent fiscal quarter (Q2), Twilio — while exceeding Wall Street’s expectations — reported a loss of $322.8 million on $943.4 million in revenue.
Shares were up about 1% on news of the layoffs; Twilio’s stock has fallen about 73% this year.

The legal team for the racing star stated they are prepared to launch a lawsuit if doing so would allow them to recoup the $12 million that inexplicably vanished from Bolt’s account.
According to a statement made by Bolt’s attorneys, there is reportedly just $12,000 still in Usain Bolt’s account.
“The account was part of Bolt’s retirement and lifetime savings,” his lawyer, Linton P. Gordon, told Fortune magazine over the phone. It’s distressing news for anyone, and certainly in the case of Mr Bolt, who established this account as part of his private pension,” Gordon said on Wednesday.
“We will be going to court with the matter” if the company does not return the funds, Gordon said. It is a grave disappointment, and we are hoping that the matter will be resolved in a way that Mr Bolt will recover his money and be able to live in peace.”
